Hey There Gay Dudes!
Another article for you!
I know I can get a bit sciencey at times (you will have to forgive me.... its just that there's a lot that's not being taught because of how slow science is to confirm anything when there is even a shred of controversy out there, and you deserve better!).... but today's talk will hopefully be a bit more interesting!
As the Earth continues to revolve around The Sun... and as our society ages and evolve with its technology... the habits and customs of our species continue to change around us!
One such example... that you ALL already know of... is the recent shift in focus from theatres to home television!
There are a lot of economic reasons why this event is occurring... but the most important aspect to fans however should be... how does it impact the art being delivered to your screen, door!?
Well... based on my viewing of Netflix/Disney/Everyone Else...... not very well actually!!!
As much as executives can see the draw of creating lower cost art that consists of only.... constant talking... (ie. a television budget...)... the end result so far to the audience is decidedly of less quality than the theatrical films we were offered before at the market!
Boo! Hiss!!!
And when the overall marketshare of need is not immediately reduced... when a lower quality product is created... the long term effects of switching to lower budged art... on societies addiction to the motion pictures.... is yet to be known... and could result in turning off viewers even quicker to other higher interactive formats such as video games.
So when executives can win a salary by selling a quick fix to a boardroom consisting of those who neither like the art... or the science... don't be convinced the shuffling of value in the switch to home entertainment.. will immediately result in higher quality or better competition for the viewers. Executives can hide the failure of their art to maintain an audience behind the revenue of the technology switch!
However as an R&D scientist... I can tell you one of the best ways to switch the direction of executives obsessed with whatever miniscule savings they have learned to bark in circles to a crowd... is to offer up a better idea that no one was fully thinking of!
So while I believe the best choice for the future of art is to maintain the grandiose "arms race" that is the theatre (or the 3h movie).... one idea to better spend a television budget on than the endless "talking" drivel you currently see... is to get rid of narrative entirely!
Why not spend your budget on a better experiment instead!!?
Why not create a 3-6h battle only!?
I really am serious! I think its what could work well for a lot of the hardcore fans!
No substantial dialogue... or plot. At all!
Just sides of a war...two colors that explain itself to the audience watching.
You see... the fanniest fans.... want to live their passion in every way possible. Whether its branding their chips, to their underwear, to their vacations... fans want to "live" their favorite art in nearly every way they can!
And regardless of nearly everything you do... they will run out of narrative media very quickly... unlike other forms of art... again like video games.... see Battlefront II and #replayability!
So one thing you could try instead of saving through cost recuction (resulting in lower quality art and thus the universe)... is to reach a new audience with a new idea!
So if you create your art... to be more of a background music video... of a sorts... I think you could maybe reach fans that have exhausted the available visual narrative entertainment offerings.
So what does that look like?
A television left on when everyone is busy.
A screen that flashes through the coolest action scenes with the coolest characters you love only.
In a sort of circle. In an "artificial" trench war.
Whenever you look back at the screen... you have not missed 60% of a narrative because your life got in the way. Instead your branded themed motion picture slideshow is still in the thick of it... just where you left it!!
Again... so just like in Alterac Valley... or Warsong Gultch... one can create art designed to be utilized in a far more repeated fashion for visual media... to get the most value out of your development!
So whether the future contains Spiderman webslinging into a frame on your wall... or a t.v. left on The Battle of New York for hours..... I believe there is a real future in narrativeless entertainment in the new home box office.
And interestingly enough ... this art will be far closer to what a lot of your favorite directors have pined for constantly!
Art without dialogue.
Like those bizarro french films without a point that fail horribly at the market... but redesigned to be your Star Wars action t.v. slideshow!!
One that really doesn't have to balance a lot of the new standard requirements of gender/character/race interaction nearly as difficult. Everyone can enjoy the brawl!
So while I believe we are currently in a drought of quality... as executives defend their new "lower development cost' territory by obfuscating what the actual profits would have been in a reality where they chose to create better art... currently by using the profits of the online technology switch to hide their failures (honestly you have to understand the job of executives at already successful companies can be reduced to trying to get everyone to look away for awhile, and go home for dinner... while they continue collect a paycheck)... there is still hope for the future of quality home entertainment!
Creators might just have to start branching out once again from the artifical paradigm of the television or film formats... that really were never all that optimized before... and certainly are not now!
And when it comes to the potential available in the market for narrativeless art.... the sky could really be the limit. When beautiful visual/audio creations could be offered as a sort of "Aromatherapy"... who would not want start their work day... with a "David Fincher" on in the background.
