The birds were singing as Steve woke up. He was back in the woods. He looked around, he was lying naked in a clearing in the woods, his uniform and helmet were neatly piled up next to him, two bikes stood nearby. Jake was climbing groggily to his feet, his own uniform and helmet by his side.
"Shit, the bastard did it to us again" said Steve angrily.
"And I had the weirdest dream…" muttered Jake. He looked at Steve and Steve looked back. Without a word they knew it had been no dream.
Quickly, they pulled on their uniforms, nothing was missing. Steve picked up his watch. "We've been out of it for six hours!"
"Fuck, how do we explain to the Lieutenant?"
Steve was thinking fast. "Let me call Shirley, see what's been happening"
He called Shirley the dispatcher back at the station. Nothing else had been reported in. He knew that if he told her the truth, both he and Jake would be in serious trouble. He could take that, but he couldn't let Jake be hurt. So he lied.
"Shirley, seems some joker's been playing with our radio frequencies. Both me and Jake have been chasing about all over the place on false calls. We just figured it out"
A relieved female voice crackled over the airwaves. "Another initiation stunt? The Lieutenant is going to be furious when I tell him. You know how he hates that sort of thing. Jeez, he thought some weirdo had kidnapped you both. See you when you get back"
The two cops were fully uniformed again. "If we play it cool we should be OK, Jake".
"How cool do you want to be?" asked Jake, looking straight at him.
Steve smiled and answered by leaning forward, planting his warm mouth on Jake's responding lips.
"My place, tonight?" he whispered. Jake grinned and nodded.
Some distance away Adam turned off the police radio and smiled to himself. Time to move on.
